You're used to a routine; get up early, make your way to the office, check your emails, get things done then, eagerly await 5 pm so you can go home and catch up on your favorite series. That's how life feels nowadays, like a slow grind towards dreams that always seem just out of reach.

But what if I told you that there was a way to extend your reach? That you could make money from anywhere? Whether it's your home, your favorite restaurant, or the desk at work that feels like a steel ball shackled to your ankle. "How?" You might ask—two words: Affiliate advertising.

Affiliate advertising refers to when you promote someone else's products or services and get paid for every sale you generate from your promotion. Sounds amazing, right? Well, it sure is. Imagine spending close to nothing and getting paid for it. All you'd need is a little data, and you'd be sitting on a gold mine. Let me show you how.

Though a lot of businesses haven't caught on to the advantages of affiliate advertising, it is slowly becoming more popular with both brand and affiliate advertisers. After all, it's a win-win situation.

Here's how it works

Three parties are involved. These are: The brand or company offering the product or service, the advertiser and the consumer.

The company is first on the pyramid because it is the provider of the product or service. The affiliate advertiser then becomes the middleman. Affiliate advertisers could be individuals or whole companies that present the products to customers in an appealing way that convinces them to buy the product. If the customer ends up making a purchase, the advertiser receives a portion of the revenue made, i.e., a commission. Affiliates often advertise to targeted audiences; thus, making advertising more direct and appealing by taking into account the interests of the audience. The final party is the customer. Most times, they don't know they are the driving force behind affiliate advertising. They only view the products on social media, blogs, and websites. When they finally make the purchase, the affiliate receives his or her cut for making them aware of their need.

How affiliate advertisers get paid

1.  On sales derived

Once the affiliate does their part to promote the product and gets a customer to make a purchase, he or she is given an agreed-upon commission by the producers of the product. The amount or percentage paid is discussed by the affiliate and the product's creators beforehand.

2.  Pay per lead

When the customer visits the company's website, leaves their contact information, signs up to their newsletters or, fills a sign-up form, the affiliate gets a payment. This is because their efforts increased the number of interactions that potential customers had with the company's website, which could eventually lead to a sale or referral.

3  Pay per click

Here, the affiliate is paid based on the number of times people click on their link. They don't necessarily have to buy or do anything. Just clicking on the link from their site seals the deal for the affiliate.

Popular types of affiliate advertising

Influencers

Influencers are people who have the power to sway large groups of people into making decisions. They could be celebrities or people who hold a respected position in different aspects of life. Influencers could post a great product review on their most popular platforms, and this would drive sales for the product.

Bloggers

Bloggers sample the product given by the company and write reviews that will promote the brand and drive traffic to the seller's sites.

Traditional media

These include platforms such as TV, radio, and print media. A company has to enter into talks with media outlets. Once the details are ironed out, their advertisements are run. These platforms could drive sales since many people engage with traditional forms of media all over the world.

Email marketing

Some sites ask for your email address to update you on their products, offers they are having, and products they are introducing, among other things. This method has been used for years and is still productive and draws traffic to company sites, also driving sales.

Why should you become an affiliate advertiser?

Cost effective

You don't have to create a product from scratch; therefore, there's little to no capital needed. There are also no fees to join affiliate programs. You just need to be creative, determined, and do your research well on the best ways you can communicate the value of the product.

You can work from home

Isn't that just exciting to know? Working from the comfort of your home is simply amazing. All you need is a laptop or desktop and wi-fi, and you can get things done.

Performance-based rewards

With other jobs, you could work overtime and put in your best effort but still get the same pay. With affiliate advertising, you are paid in terms of your performance, so the pay reflects the effort.

Convenient and flexible.

Because you are a freelancer, you have independence when it comes to planning out your work, choosing what brands you're comfortable working with and who you work with.

Being an affiliate advertiser could be your next big achievement. As long as you put in the right skill and effort, it will be smooth sailing.
